Stainless Steel Sediment Filter for Well Water
Well and borehole water often carries sand, grit and rust that wear out pumps, block valves and stain fixtures. A sediment filter on the line from the well catches them before they reach the house. Our stainless steel sediment filter uses a washable stainless mesh cartridge: when it fills with sand, you rinse it and put it back. Kits start at $129 with free shipping to the US (DDP), UK, EU, Australia and New Zealand.
What it removes, and what it does not
- Removes: sand, grit, rust flakes, scale and silt, down to the mesh or cartridge you choose.
- Does not remove: dissolved iron or manganese, hardness, sulfur smell, bacteria or chemicals. Get your well water tested and treat those separately.
Choose your size
| Well line | Kit size | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 3/4 in or 1 in line, light sand | 2.5 in x 10 in | $129 |
| 3/4 in or 1 in line, more sand or longer cleaning interval | 2.5 in x 20 in | $179 |
| 1 in to 2 in line, higher flow | 4.5 in jumbo x 10 / 20 / 30 in | $229 / $289 / $399 |
All sizes: stainless steel whole house sediment filter kit, one SUS304 housing with a 100 mesh stainless cartridge fitted, NPT or BSP (G) threads at the same price. Not sure which length? Use the cartridge fit checker or see whole house water filter housings.
Picking the mesh
- 100 mesh (fitted as standard) catches most well sand and lasts longest between cleanings.
- 200 or 300 mesh catches finer grit but fills faster. Order a spare 2.5 in or jumbo mesh cartridge in the finer mesh if you need it.
- For fine silt, add a second housing with a PP sediment cartridge after the mesh stage. The mesh takes the sand, so the PP cartridge lasts longer.
Mesh cartridges are rated to 6 bar (87 PSI) and 60 °C. Check that your pressure switch setting stays below 6 bar.
Where to fit it
- On the cold line from the well, before the house and before any softener, UV unit or water heater.
- Fit isolation valves on both sides, so you can open the housing without draining the system.
- Leave room below the housing to lift out the cartridge.
- If your water is salty or brackish, choose SUS316, made to order. See 304 vs 316 stainless steel.
FAQ
Is this approved for drinking water?
No. Our housings and cartridges do not carry NSF, WaterMark or other drinking-water approvals. Check your local rules before fitting them on a potable supply.
How often do I clean the mesh cartridge?
It depends on how much sand your well produces. When the flow or pressure in the house drops, shut the valves, take out the cartridge, rinse it and refit it.
Will it protect my well pump?
A filter after the pump protects everything downstream: the pressure tank, pipes, valves and appliances. It does not stop sand from passing through the pump itself.
Does it remove iron staining?
It catches rust flakes and particles. Dissolved iron, the kind that stains after the water sits, passes through and needs a separate iron filter.
Can I get a different port size?
The kits come in 3/4 in and 1 in ports for 2.5 in, and 1, 1.5 and 2 in for jumbo, in NPT or BSP. For anything else, ask us.
