Why stainless steel filter housings?

Plastic housings are fine for cold mains water. Stainless steel housings are chosen when the water is warm, the fluid is not water, the housing sits outdoors in sunlight, or it has to be cleaned and reused for years. For hot liquids or high pressure, send us your temperature and pressure before ordering and we will confirm whether a housing suits your duty.

How to choose a housing

  • Cartridge diameter: 2.5 in (60 mm ±1 mm) is the standard size. 4.5 in (102 mm ±1 mm) is the jumbo size. Large-bore housings take φ133 mm cartridges.
  • Cartridge length: 10 in and 20 in are the most common. Longer cartridges give more filter area for the same diameter.
  • Closure: a threaded lid is simple and compact. A clamp lid opens by hand without a wrench, which is faster for frequent cartridge changes. A clamp lid is not the same as tri-clamp ports.
  • Ports: NPT threads are used in the United States. G (BSPP) parallel threads are used in the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Tri-clamp ferrules are used on sanitary lines. Every threaded housing lists NPT and BSP/G as separate options.
  • Material: SUS304 suits most water duties. SUS316 resists chlorides and salt water better. SUS304 or SUS316 describes the housing body; see 304 vs 316.

Common applications

Whole house and well water pre-filtration, RO pre-filtration, process water, cooling water, brewing and beverage lines, and chemical transfer. For food, beverage or chemical duties, tell us the liquid and cleaning chemicals before ordering.
